Few weeks ago in Melbourne, Australia; I have had a very interesting conversion with this lady. She herself has all the experience and understand on what development is to her; she had a wealth of experience within the medical field and has passion for children.
The discussion was so rich with interest when she mentioned the establishment of her foundation in Vanuatu. The foundation established was in memory of Mrs. Jewson's daughter, the foundations aim is to develop partnership in health and education in Vanuatu.
Living in Vanuatu, know as the happiest place on earth; were every where you turn people greet you with the biggest smile; you closest friend would not share with you if they are having school fee or medical problems. Understanding the Ni-Vanuatu way of living family tends to be the vertebra; people live their own lives but always know that they could always turn to their family in times of need. This you will see in most community settings in the rural and the wide spread islands of Vanuatu.
Live is different within the urban areas of Vanuatu; included are Port Vila the capital of Vanuatu and Luganville 2nd town Vanuatu; located on the island of Espiritu Santo, the standard of living within the settlements of the urban is low compare to other developed pacific countries. The reason being that employment is a struggle, and if you do have job salary rates are measured to minimum wage which is yet again not enough to sustain a family. Key spending for a family living in the urban settings are Rent, Water, Food, Electricity, Property investment and School fee. With this ranking medical or savings are the two least a low earning employee would want to focus spending on.
Within the rural community access is the boulder; access to medical facilities, access to educational institutions, access to income and access to transportation all combined. In some of the rural communities pregnant mothers would not have access to medical facilities, which leads to no health check for babies until birth, if they do have access to health facilities it would be the lack of transport or income to ensure they get regular health check before birth, this then results to child mortality before or during birth.
In these similar situation children whom should be attending school either have no access to education facilities or no income to pay for access to education. Education is key to any success and knowledge is power.
You would see a child smile only when they feel they have pride in having access to education and also when their health is been taken care of by supporting and loving families.
I thank The Melanie Jawson Foundation for supporting making this happen in my beautiful paradise Vanuatu. Please visit them on this link and support with your donation.
